9D are a group of passionate graphic designers who want to shake the tree and see what falls out. They have intentionally set out to shake the tree together, as a group questioning the status quo perception and understanding of the 'isolated artist'. Working together as a group 9D's aim is to push each other, encourage experimentation (often something easily forgotten by commercial designers) and bounce off each other. What is the outcome of all this?

9D are presenting a collection of their work in an exhibition entitled Offset. The exhibition takes place at St Pauls Street Gallery 3 (39 Symonds Street, Auckland CBD) from 8-13 November. The show is already fairly unique in the Auckland scene because it is a graphic design exhibition which we don't get to see too many of in these parts. Ralph Matthews, one of the 9D collective, says "The exhibition will present work in unconventional ways so as to challenge the viewer and to engender reaction and discussion." Most likely tied into their interest in experimentation the exhibition pro-ports to shun the concept of computers being overly integrated into the act of designing. That said the group are also very interested in exploring different ways to present, convey and immerse their audience in the work, the exhibition is made up of a diverse mix of technologies including motion graphics, new and old printing technologies, web, sculptural installation and open source code interactive design.

It isn't very often that we get to experience graphic design in an exhibition setting in Auckland, though it surrounds us everyday in almost every way in a commercial setting. Offset by 9D is a great opportunity to see the other side of the coin, an exciting collectively created exhibition looking to push the boundaries of how graphic design is presented and viewed.

Go and see it.
