It is Urbid Morbia
Last week I was lucky enough to check out Urbid Morbia at the James Wallace trust Gallery in Auckland. Urbid Morbia is an exhibition presented by sculptor Alexander Hoyles and photographer James Lowe. The show is only on for another week so here is some info to help you get along.
Aside from the actual artistic merit of the sculpture & photography in this show, I must mention something from my more childish side. The exhibition features some of my favorite kind of sculpture, the kind you desperately want to touch but know that you shouldn't. This included a wonderfully soapy looking body which was beautifully placed on an installed tiled floor, just far enough away that you knew you could reach out and physically discover what kind of shine that was, gooey or otherwise, but you didn't.
The photography component of the exhibition was one of the few times in the last little while that I've really enjoyed large format prints. The images only gained from their presentation, which, by the looks of the concrete screws which held them up, was well considered.
It, like all exhibitions, is better seen than spoken about and runs for another week at the James Wallace Trust Gallery (305 Queen Street, Auckland). So check out Urbid Morbia before it closes on the 30th of January; I think you will like it.
